Water Mist Fire Systems

Water Mist Sprinkler Systems work by breaking water into a cloud of very small droplets that greatly increases the surface area available for absorbing heat. When water turns to steam on contact with the fire it reduces heat and rapidly expands preventing oxygen entering the fire.

Mist systems can use less water than conventional water sprinkler systems effectively suppressing and extinguishing fires but should only be used in fighting fires in contained compartments without ventilation or apertures.

Environmentally friendly and sustainable but should only be used in fighting medium sized fires.

Water mist systems have been demonstrated to be suitable and effective for the protection of enclosed spaces on board ships and are an emerging technology for fire protection. They have been successfully applied to protect assets such as electronic equipment, machine rooms etc.

Water mist systems are part of an overall package of fire safety measures in contained and enclosed environments and should not be considered in isolation. Water mist systems are similar to a sprinkler system, designed to extinguish flammable liquid fires or to provide cooling to an exposed area likely to be subjected to intense heat from a nearby fire.

One of the key advantages of water mist systems over conventional systems is that they use less water to control a fire. Specially designed nozzles divide the water into a mist of small droplets which increases the surface area for absorbing heat. A second extinguishing effect occurs as the fine water droplets evaporate and rapidly expand. This draws air away from the fire depriving it of its primary fuel, oxygen.
